I have a 1975 Glastron Skiflite 14.5 ft. with a 1979 evinrude 115hp. The boat is rated for 85hp. I have never had it on the water. I was wondering if that engine is going to be too much power. Is the rig safe.

Re: Is my rig safe?

In 1979 both the J/E 85HP and 115 are built on the same engine and weigh the same - 288 lbs + PT&T (13 lbs) + 25" long shaft (add 5 LBs). So as far as weight, there is not any difference.

Both engines run the same to about 5,000 RPM and then the power difference will start to show. I think you should consider how fast you want the boat to go and act accordingly.

You may have an insurance issue. Check with your agent.

You can explain to him that this motor is a 1979 motor and was rated by the then current standard. After 1985, the 1979 115 would have been rated about 90HP.

you have the power, but don't have to use it all. if everything is up to par with hull and motor, i would expect 50mph plus.. and the boat be pretty close to unstable, at that speed.
