how do i know if my starter solenoid needs to be replaced? how about my coils? how do i check my timing? Need advice from the experts!

I began a marine repair class last nite. This first thing the teacher (expert) told us was, "The only thing a marina has over the general public is copies of the manuel" You will find the answers to most of all of your questions when you purchase a manuel.
