Hey folks I'm looking to repaint my 20' sea craft to and bottom. I've had to do some fiberglass patching and remove all paint etc. I was wondering if marine topside paint is a GEL coat. I'm trying to do this on somewhat of a budget. Is it primitive that I use a gel coat or does the rustoleum topside and bottom side suffice. The entire GEL coat will not be remove only where I'm patching. I'm going with a black and Orange scheme with a white deck. The Orange paint is coming from iboats

No rustoleum is not gel coat. The paint you ordered is just paint. You can use either but gel coat is a bit more durable expecially on the bottom of the boat

Thank you for a speedy reply. I'm going to be doing the coats on everything. I forgot to mention that thus is only a fw boat and will never see saltwater again. Well this suffice for a fresh water boat. I could GEL coat it if it's possible to roll on the GEL coat

Gel coat and paint are two different things. Gel coat is basically the outer layer of resin with a colorant added. (when the hull is laid up, the gel coat is sprayed inside the mold and the subsequent layers of resin and cloth are built up, so the gel coat is an integral part of the hull makeup).
Any paint (logically) is chemically different than the hull composition and is applied on top of the resin that the hull is built of.

An older hull can have a new layer of gel coat applied, but the process is not one that most boat owners would want to tackle themselves.

It sounds like you are talking about painting your boat and not applying a new gel coat. ----- Both things are perfectly acceptable, but technically quite different.

Well just in the spots that I've have to take down to the glass for repair. Plus there are spots that have big chunks of paint missing that I well have to sand down to nothing also. But I am painting the boat in it's entirety
