made you a quick video to show you exactly what I'm experiencing.

you can see the other browser windows open and you can see when I type in the part number and click to search, bam, it all shuts down and I'm back to looking at my email haha

and yeah, its crappy cell phone video thats a bit blurry but you should get the idea.

Re: is the iboats parts search engine crashing anyone else's browser?

Good job, stackz. That's exactly what happens on mine. Only difference, I'm not searching a particular part number, just clicking on one of the sub-categories, say for example, Boat Covers. Anything I click on that page will slam it shut.

Chonguey2, I looked at the info on the fix and it appears I should have already gotten it several years ago through update. I don't even have the registry subkey they show as being the culprit, so I'm a little leery about applying the hotfix since they hint at the possibility of it going badly.

I do, however, have the option of loading IE8 which is how I believe I will handle it. I skipped that update a couple of years back for reasons that aren't really clear right now, so maybe now is the time.

Thanks for all your help.

Thanks for the video, stackz. It may be a simple cell phone video, but it provided me enough of a clue into maybe where to look for the culprit.

Based on your video and this research, we have implemented a possible fix. There is no guarantee that this fix is even what was causing the problem, but we are trying to eliminate all possibilities one by one.

Please close your browser completely and try a part search again. If it crashes (or not) please let us know and we will continue to examine the problem.

I completely understand. That's why I suggested relying on your local IT manager, if you had one. Based on additional research today it is safe to conclude that the hotfix will NOT fix this issue, and we are looking in to other possibilities. However, like stackz you can try again and keep us up to date.

This is in my mind a fairly important issue to correct, so I will keep on it until we have it solved.

Thanks for all your feedback.

Re: is the iboats parts search engine crashing anyone else's browser?

it will be a couple days before I can check again as I took tomorrow off from work and I'm already home on my kindle fire now. On sunday I'll be traveling for work to a duty station and once I get settled in, I'll log on and check and see if you've got it fixed. but what you saw in the video is what it universally does to me whether a parts search or clicking sublinks.

just out of curiosity, what do you think it is?

I'm going to keep IE7 for the time being just to have another test station. Got my laptop if I need the marine store. I'll check it from time to time over the next few days.

Just to add, as of right now, it still crashes.

ok, got setup at the hotel and logged in on my intranet connection and checked the part number search again. I dont know if its because I'm logged in remotely instead of jacked directly into our work servers but instead of just instantly closing, this time it gave me an error message and I took the following screenshot:

dont know if this will help you guys or not?

Ah ha! Are you running an anti-virus software such as McAfee? Or do you have additional security programs or "Active X controls" installed? This is the most likely culprit.

Memory Read errors are problems with the operating system and installed software on your system, and not a problem with the website itself.

It's unfortunate that the problem is manifesting itself on the iboats.com site, but in this case, the problem is not with the website itself, but rather is a problem with the setup of your computer and the software your IT department has chosen to install on your machine.

We have gone over every possibility of the problem being on our end, and we have come up empty handed. In this case, the only explanation is a problem with your computer itself.

I get the same problem using internet explorer 7, if I switch over to Google Chrome, no problem the search works fine. Same computer, same anti virus, same active x controls. It just doesn't work with IE7.
I just checked in the last 2 minutes.

Right. I need to reiterate the fact that this crashing problem is ONLY associated with IE7, as it is a bug in the operating system and browser, one that has been fixed in subsequent versions of Internet Explorer and Windows. However, because Microsoft has stopped updating Windows XP, the bug remains in computers running an old browser on an older computer.

All other browsers are unaffected, and the website will function 100% as intended for all people who are using a modern operating system and browser.

Sadly, because the problem lies with Microsoft, there is nothing we can do on this end to fix the problem other than suggest people use a different browser on Windows XP. I understand that this is not possible for some people, but there is nothing we can do on our end to stop the browser from crashing. The issue causing the crash is 100% out of our control.

about the only thing I have to say in response to that is nothing security wise, etc has changed on my work pc in the past year. only thing that has changed was that I noticed a different format to the iboats website recently. then when I went to search parts I started having issues. I dont have this issue on other boat parts websites (or any other website actually) and since I dont have a pc at home I guess that means I'll just have to get stuff elsewhere unless my IT department waves a wand and we get an upgrade or you go back to the old beloved by all format lol.

I guess it is what it is. thanks for the help anyway.

Re: is the iboats parts search engine crashing anyone else's browser?

Sort of the same thing with me, I shop on many sites and it has never happened before, only here, and only recently. I used to supply links to this site for people to find parts they need, but I can't look up anything now.

Fewer people update their software or computers these days, so I can imagine there are many of us out there using older software that isn't compatible with this site now.

I would say only a very small percentage of the people having problems will report them, they will just move on to a different site after a couple of failed attempts.

We have discovered another potential culprit on our end and have fixed it as of 5 minutes ago. When you have a second, please try again and let us know if the crash is still occuring

Re: is the iboats parts search engine crashing anyone else's browser?

Excellent!!!!!! I'm glad to hear it is working now. The problem was with a Javascript library we use to do advanced browser effects, etc. They released a new version today that specifically addressed a crashing issue in IE7. When we saw that, we upgraded right away in hopes it was our phantom bug.

Thanks for all your help and patience with us as we explored the issue. We couldn't have solved it without your help.
