Is there a 4 stroke 3rd party repair manual?

I have a 2004 NFS 9.8a that has a fouled carb. again. Once every year since I bought it. After the first rebuild, I installed a pre-filter and always ran the gas out of the carb and never used gas older than 4 weeks. But, that hasn't been enough. The last rebuild cost me twice the cost of the year before, so now I have purchased this engine twice.

This year I decided I would rebuild the carb myself, being unemployed and lots of spare time, and no spare money. So I bought the factory service manual and a carb kit. But the service manual has so very little information. I have looked and looked for a seloc or other 3rd party manual, but I cant locate one. Does anyone know if there is a better one on the market than the factory manual?

I haven't seen any Seloc, Clymer, etc. manuals for the Tohatsu 4-strokes (Clymer has one for the 2-strokes). But you might find one for the Mercury version of it. Tohatsu builds the small Mercury's and the internal workings (carbs, etc) would be the same as the Tohatsu. Merc is a 9.9hp (not 9.8 like Tohatsu). I'm not sure what year Tohatsu started building the Mercury 9.9hp so you may want to do some checking before buying a manual for a 9.9hp. Prior to Tohatsu building them, I think Mercury built their own although it may have only been the 2-stroke that Mercury built.

Page 71 of the Factory manual shows all you need to know, including proper float height (9mm).

P.71 of the service manual is exactly my problem. What is the cutaway diagram of the Fuel level trying to say? How do I adjust the float so the fuel level is 9mm?

Perhaps you need a friend who understands carbs and knows what float height is about. If you can't get that help and education at home, it's probably time for a visit to the dealer.

The diagram shows how to measure the height (with carb upper section upside-down, allowing gravity to push the needle shut). The dimension extension lines in the diagram show where to measure. Check to see that it is correct. You likely don't have to adjust it, just verify it. You would change it by bending the arm on the float -- or installing a new float and needle (in the carb kit). DO NOT bend against the needle/seat, or you will damage the nitrile tip on the needle. But I have never seen one on a 9.8 that was off height, as long as the needle was in good shape. The float is plastic, and doesn't bend well, btw.

Usual problem with these is that they need a thorough cleaning (by soaking in real carb cleaner and then blowing out -- not just the spray junk).

Thank you, that explains a lot. I found help if I get stuck (again). One more question: I am in Calif., and the word is Ca can't sell the liquid carb. cleaner. I was able to find something called Sea Foam (not foam, liquid) that says it's a gas treatment, but small print says it can be used in injector cleaning machines. Ingredients: Pet. distillate, Pet. Oil, 2-Propanol

Does this sound like an alternative?

Seafoam should be considered a fuel additive. Pretty weak stuff as far as cleaning carbs goes. You will want an aggressive, soak-type carb cleaner, such as Tyme. Even Californians need to clean carbs. Check internet-based stores or auto parts houses. Usually available in 1-gallon cans.
