Is there a way to check the timing advance mechanism in my old distributor

Suddenly ..... after many changes - new pushrods, new hyd. lifters, new spark plugs, new oil, new oil filter and new fuel pump ..... the distributor won't hold timing. The rotor jumps 50-60 degrees when I attempt to start it.
I pull the distributor and the drive gear is fine, as is the gear on the shaft. And I have been cinching the distributor to the engine very tight.
I pulled the plate to check the advance mechanism and cannot tell if it is stuck or jammed. Can't tell.
Pulled the fuel pump to see if the pumping lever is smacking the distributor drive gear. Nope.
Something is causing that distributor to jump out of timing??????????
Note: This all started with a clattering noise on the top of the engine and I've been at it for a month..... am at my wit's end.

Parts man!! sometimes higher pressure is not good. it takes resistance to create pressure and higher pressure can cause leaks and loss of flow rate. there are several post and websites on filter evaluations. there is one with flows and pressure drops somewhere. do a search for the info. i think k&n builds a quality filter.

Most oil filters allow bypass if pressure builds due to restrictions or clogs resulting from a dirty filter or cold startup. Oil filters allow oil to flow, virtually unrestricted. Oil filters should never increase oil pressure. Check these out...

http://www.websorcerer.com/GeekOut/

http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study/

hello
just buy the merc one
only about 10% of the oil actually goes through the filter. the rest is bypased directly into the oil gallies.
good luck but get to wild with filters.

I checked out all the discussions about testing various filters and come away with just one thought: "My oil pressure has dropped to about 25psi, and that bothers me. I've never seen that low a pressure. Should I get a new oil pump?"
Thanks,

What weight oil did you use? You sometimes can loose pressure with thinner oils.

Someone mentioned that, if a pushrod is tightened too much it might be pushing the drive shaft - the one the distributor drive gear is on - away from the gear on the distributor shaft??? Is that possible???
