I have a '94 Bayliner with Mercruiser 3.0 4cyl motor that didn't get winterized and now has a cracked block..... Is there anyway of fixing it or I just need a new motor?... I read some threds on here and some people say that "Marine-TEK is the products works well for this purpose." I was just wondering if anyone tried it and if it works.
thanks!

As long as the crack is external and doesn't involve any oil-soaked metal. It would depend on the extent of the cracking. You have to remove all of the paint from the area and rough-up the surface real good. Smear on the Marine-Tex and it can last for years. If it starts leaking again, grind it off and do it again for more years. I've done it to a few for customers and have seen a few that have come in and they still run fine.

I had no water in oil issues, so mine was welded and then Marine TeK was applied over that. You have to strip it down so it can be welded(expert cast iron welder needed). I would do all this so you don't have to worry about it. Much cheaper than a new motor and more permanent than marine Tek(alone) or Jb weld

I disagree,..... I've welded quite a few blocks,......

I don't bother with the Welding anymore,..... just Epoxy works Great,+ is Much Easier......

Ya my only experience is the welding. After it was welded they said Marine TeK is like a weld so it is great stuff and will stop any seepage. I agree, try the Marine Tek to save money.

Here's a pic of the crack. Let me know what you guys think. (I hope it works, it's my first time posting a pic.)............ I didn't start my boat, When I took it to get summarized they told me about the prob. I don't know how they knew. They also told me that they didn't start it. Man I hope I can do the patch thing. I've been looking for a new motor most of the summer and cant find one for decent price..

does water leak out the crack ? you should have a shallow hole drilled at each end of the crack to stop if from growing b4 you epoxy it.

You've Got to run the motor,+ See if it's Leaking Into the Oil 1st......
Otherwise,......
Drill a small hole in each end of the crack,+ Slather some Epoxy over it.....

If it's dropping Water into the Oil,........ You need a New Block........ Period.....

I've never heard of that, so I looked it up. It's very interesting, seems they sell kits, too. Check out the crack they fixed in this 5.9 Cummins. That is an excellent repair...

Ayuh,.......

Stitching is a Great Way to fix alot of broken Cast Iron parts,.....
But,.......
The method relies on Compression to hold it together,....
And,....
Where this block is Cracked it wouldn't be my 1st choice, as it would cause Distortion to the block's deck......
Which would cause head Gasket Problems........

As I Said,...... If it's not leaking water into the Oil,..... Epoxy is the Best answer here......

Forget it Bond-o. He wants that Marine Tex stuff. I've used it to repair some chips in my gelcoat, worked great. Would I use it to repair a cracked block? Nope. But, to each his own...............................

Marine-Tex makes several products, sea wolf. Including several epoxies. I don't think anyone, including alegkiy, would use gel-coat repair products on their block either.

alegkiy: This is the one you want. That said, JB Weld would work as well or maybe even better. They are very similar. I have never used any Marine-Tex products, but I have used JB Weld on lots of things and it would be my choice.

You sure can't say anything bad about Gluvit, though...
