Took in my 14 ft cc with an 1983 500 on it for a tune up as i could not get it idling well. I had previously done a carb and fuel pump rebuild, impeller replacement and checked compression which was good. Got it peeing water good but could not get it to run smooth and would not idle at all. Heres what the shop came back with, Carb cleaning/rebuild needed (i didn't soak carb bodies which i think i should have), lower unit serviced, bad powerpack. $750 for parts and labor.

I was expecting i would been in for at least $400 but i wasn't anticipating a bad power pack. They said they were running it temporarily and powerpack started to smoke and insulation was melted. They said the price for the power pack itself is $245.

Does $750 sound in line for these parts and labor or am i getting screwed on parts markups and such?

im paying $140.00 for a new water pump assembly on my 1986 merc 60hp. thats canadian funds, works out to about free american, hahaha. but i would think that sounds fair. but if your not sure price around, never hurts, tell other places your issue, and what that mechanic says you need, im sure they will give you a ball park idea over the phone.

another thing i always watch. i took my motor in to a 20 year merc veteran to get checked once. i figured he was the guy in my area who knew his stuff. while i went back later to watch the apprentice twiddle his thumbs for almost ever, while i was paying 70 bucks an hour?? i wasnt happy. the experienced guy was busy trying to make a sale on a $7000.00 outboard. after that i always asked how long it takes for each thing, and had them break down their quotes. i know people need to learn to keep the world turning, but i dont feel i should be charged the same rate for an apprentice, or shop helper to sit and think, especially without guidance.

Somebodys fixing to stick it to ya!!! A new pack from CDI is only $210.00 and shopping aftermarketyou can get it a little cheaper. Also there is not enough amps in the ignition circuit to melt a pack and insulation. Have them explain how this happened without damaging the stator and charging rectifier.

Get a couple of quotes, but cheaper doesn't always mean better.

The shop has to make mark up the parts to stay in business.

At the end of the day when you pick the your boat and all is well for the rest of the season it's money well spent.
