is this a fuel problem?

i had the old 85 90hp rude out this weekend to do some fishing, well the boat was running allright and after awhile I decided to kick her up and blow out the cobs. So I take her around the lake at close to top end for about a 5 mile trip and pull up to fish alittle more and noticed that when i throttled down to idle she died , well i didn't think much of it until i tried to restart about an hr, later and I could barely get her to start and when i did the warm up lever would barely get the rpm to a grand and as soon as i clicked the warm up lever down to try and kick her in gear it would die. So it stayed that way overnight and tried to restart in the morning it did the same but I managed to keep the rpm up enuff to get her in gear and after that she ran fine albeit a tad rough. I had just taken her in a few weeks ago and had a sync and link done and checked the spark and compression and the mech said it was all fine! any ideas on this one?<br /><br />thnx<br />mark

pcm,<br /><br />You are not hitting on all four cylinders. Have a look at the spark plugs, they will tell you which cylinders aren't working.

Since it was running fine before, my guess would be that a little trash was pumped into the idle circuits of the carb during the "high gas-sucking" part of the trip. Cleaning the carb would be my first try. I like to keep a good fuel filter in my gas line for just such situations as this.
