Is this a good deal? 1982 90hp Evinrude for C$400

Not sure if I should post this question or not but I know nothing about these 'new' engines. Would it be hard to rebuild it? Or would one just part it out? C$400 seems like a good deal with all the attachments. Is it a common engine? Easy to work on? Any known issues?

samo,for 400 i would hope its clean.not a project motor,that is,unless its show room but perhaps needs rebuild due to say a lean cyl.its a ol crossflow,they are great engines,but i think technology has brought us from the dinosaures,surely the gearcase is worth that,if you need one,but by the time you rebuild,your into it for 12-1500 if you do it right ,you doing labor,dont know if you could fetch 1500 to 2000 for an 82 v4 ,if you decided 2 sell,even if rebuilt,I would buy something newer if I were shopping,is it a clean,clean eng,trim tilt etc all good,whats the compression,I know you been on the site a while,if the eng is a good clean runner,good comp.its a good deal,not if it needs rebuilding,my opinion anyway

12-1500 to rebuild? Wow, that's a lot. I assume that's replacing all the internal parts then? I was hoping for an easy rebuild but I know, one doesn't fully know until it's opened up. Is it a good engine then (when working well)? Parts easy to come by?

To someone in prime boating areas these old motors are door stops. To you and me they're good old motors. I looked at the ad and what I notice is what appears to be patches on the gear case. There are two blue spots that look like epoxy or something. I would want to verify if the lower end is sound. I would do a compression check to see what values it has and how much #3 is lower. A wet test to see if the compression increases will indicate rings or scoring.
It probably needs a full rebuild requiring the power head to be removed and torn down. I've never priced a rebuild but I can imagine the cost can get up there.

Parts are readily available. A tear down and rebuild on a 25 yr old outboard should be for personal use for a while because you'll never see a return on your investment. If a simple ring replacement gives you a few years of use, you did well. If you open her up and find "motor cancer", it will cost you plenty of time and money to have a motor you have confidence in. "let the buyer beware" hols true, especially with older outboards.
