Is this normal? water leak?

Asked this in another thread and received no response so with some pictures maybe someone can give me a clue.

This is a 1975 50hp and need to know if this water is normal. As you hopefully can see in the pictures there is water coming from the exhaust mounts on both sides and a water stream coming from the front between the lower unit and the gearcase. It is pumping water as I've run it for 15/20 munites or so and the powerhead is just barely warm.

Is there a seal between the lower and exhaust that could be leaking?

Thanks again for any and all info.

Well, that area, when in water will be completely full of water and it is unlikely that there is a gasket there so I would say that if you have just removed it from the water then it is most likely normal. I am not familiar with that motor so maybe others may have another opinion.

Sorry, I just noticed that you are running it on muffs. I would say that your pump housing must not be completely sealed and water is probably shooting out of the bottom of the pump housing. Not an ideal situation, but may not actually cause a problem. Can you put your hand on the cylinder head for more then 3 seconds without burning your fingers? If so, then your cooling system is probably doing its job. The water itself is not a problem, only if it reduces the required water for cooling.

Yes this is while on muffs. No the engine is not getting hot. Just seems strange to me to have water coming out of the front with this much pressure along with the water running down the side of the exhaust housing.

I would drop lower unit and make sure bolts are tight on the pump housing' if that checks out ok look at the mating surfaces, if they are buggered up, you can put a bead of RTV blue and that should do the trick. make sure all the lower unit bolts are snug,

Re: Is this normal? water leak?

Spent this afternoon looking at youtube videos of other 50hp Johnsons and Evinrudes running on muffs and from what I can see and tell all of them are doing this same thing. So I'm going to assume this is normal operation for these engines unless someone can tell me otherwise.

yes that's normal, that's the drain hole for the cavity around the pump housing.

Either normal or everyone has the same problem :)

Seriously. Look closely at the casting. There is an intentional gap for draining the cavity.

Thanks folks, this engine s new to me and just have never seen one that did this. Also my new manual arrived today so I've got some reading to do!
