there is black "oil" leaking out, is this just unburned fuel residue?

It is very probably just partly burnt oil from the fuel.

If you think it is viscous enough or smells like lower gear oil then check that for any signs of water ingress.

Smells like gas = unburnt 2 stroke oil
Smells like rotten eggs = lower unit oil.

thanks guys, while i was wiating for a reply i changed to lower oil. There was almost no oil! what little oil was thre looked more like water. if there is a leak where do i start looking 9.9 evinrude 1987

by the way the motor runs good, but the guy next door said he would always chang the lower oil and spark plugs when ever buying a used motor, i am so glad he warned me!

i jst when out and smelled the "oil" thats leaking, it does smell like gas so i guess thats good, does this meen i am runing to rich? i know my gas is right-on 50:1
