ok my ignition has deamons I put my boat in for the first time today and it idled fine (I think, never heard one up close except this one) putted out of no wake zone, started to hear unevenness in the motor above 1000rpm, got out of no wake and gave it throttle, sputsputsput and it dies. It starts up again just fine, but then wont go above 2200rpm barely planing. in neutral it will rev up okay (again I think) when it is going as fast as it can (in gear and moving) the motor sometimes surges.
I have gone through the carbs well and am fairly certain it is not a fuel issue. my lines are new and the bulb is always hard. the tank was removed and cleaned out, filters good, vent okay.
I am about to take it to a mech on tues to have the ignition analized since I dont have the proper test stuff. I have gone ahead and tried the switching of switch boxes with the wierdest results, never being the same (positive of proper wire placement), can the switch boxes be intermitently working when they are going bad? or the trigger/stator?

Hi jr boater, I'm thinking the same thing, my uncle had the identical symptoms and it turned out to be the trigger.

You can ohm out the trigger leads, but you'll need your manual to know what the proper readings should be...

Jr, You might post brand, year and HP of the motor in question. Those symptoms could be a stator problem, fuel problem or many other issues.

yea sorry guys this is the second post on this problem, I forgot to include engine stuff
1982 90 L6

deamons are showing their UGLY heads! Frustated I started from the begining checked compression superb all at 135 +/- 3lbs. while checking I noticed the dreaded rusty looking plug on #5 and mabey #6 only no obvious water on 6 just a little cleaner. damn!

The ignition problem resurfaced, no spark on #5, after switching the stator leads, it moved to #2(problem followed). at least im getting somewhere with that.

Did you do this? Disconnect the white/black wire between the packs on a 6 cylinder and retest. If all cylinders now fire, replace both packs as there is a problem in the bias circuitry. On all others, check for low voltage from the stator and trigger. Disconnect the rectifier and retest. If the problem disappears, replace the rectifier.
