Re: ITS HOME!! 1973 Starcraft Islander

Jas, I know little of I/O setups. Of the few I've owned, knew where to fill the gas, check the oil, and farmed out the winterization..............lol

Since the Ad mentioned both OMC and Merc, and 165, I posted the link.

How about this, after parting out the trailer and other stuff, could end up a cheap replacement?

Man your gonna have fun on that restore!!!! I can't find something like that around here. In BG KY. I have an app on my phone that anytime someone posts a boat for sale it pops up. If anyone has an iPhone or android phone... (Please get any android instead of iPhone) you can download an app called cragsnotification. Works great. You put in the city your looking for and it lets you know as soon as there is a new posting. I guess I should be looking at florida or something.

What's a fair price for a good running Chevy 250?

With the prices you will find on the off season now is the time to find what you want Be nice to have a trun key motor ready after th rebuild. Couple of GREAT prices posted and you may even sell parts from another boat to help recover your cost.

Despite my preference for outboards, I think the smart money is on finding a replacement 165. Before doing that, check out the rest of the drive system carefully.

Congrats though on a very nice hull.

I agree...I'm on the search for a good replacement 165.

I think the outdrive is OK....but I'll dig deeper.

Overall...the boat is in really good condition. The floors are very good...save for a couple very small spots, The transom is soft in a couple spots...so I might as well do the transom while I'm playing with the motor. Is there a good play-by-play thread around changing an i/o transom>

Thanx for all the support guys...

There are lots of good threads for transom rebuild on here for i/o and outboard. But i/o and outboard are gonna be the same once you take the outdrive out or motor off. Just the holes different. Do you have any glass experience?

Check out my Islander thread on the transom rebuild and install. I tried to be detailed with photos and write up.

So long as you are tearing all that out I'd go ahead and replace the deck too eh.

Good luck on the I6 search!

Yeah if there are any soft spots... Im sure there is a couple bad spots there somewhere. Once you rip it apart you'll be able to see. Or just drill some small holes to see if you come out with wet wood chips, or any wood chips at all!!

SCORE!!!.....i hope

SCORE!!!.....i hope

Check out my video ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiwC31P5pZo

Summarized, I think I scored a good motor, outdrive, alternators, pumps, throttle control with cables and miscellaneous other items.

Motor compression looks good...turns over real nice.

I hope to have the motor running tomorrow ...and I'll post a video for all to enjoy.

Project is coming along well.

On a side note...I've found 1 '74 18ft Holiday not too far from my house. I may go take a look at it...and grab it if it's not too bad. It has a 75HP johnson that needs carb work. I figure I could bang around on the holiday while I'm finishing the Islander.

My wife is going to kill me...
