Beefer, I will be interested in what you find. This past season my tank also was giving me issues. Vent was fine, and it only happened when it was less than half full or close to empty. I'm thinking vapor lock also.

Re: It's NOT the vent

I had a similar problem occur when fueling from a 5 gallon can. What was happening was when I would insert the spout, the fuel would flow equally to both the fill line and vent line. After a minute or two it was vapor locked.

I ended up running a siphon hose down the fill hose side in order to allow the tank to vent. Then I used compressed air to blow out the vent line. Then when I went back to fueling from the can, I carefully routed the flexible fill spout to the left, down into the fill hose a couple inches.

In my case is was operator error, and was easily solved by trying to be smarter than my boat. (Yeah I felt stupid)

I would suggest you take a flashlight and look down into the fill location and see if this is your problem as well.

Good thought, but I have separate fill and vent hoses.

chriscraft254 - it'll probably be a while before I figure it out. I have a couple of other projects that are taking priority over this. When I do figure it out, I'll post my findings.

Re: It's NOT the vent

Beefer, I have read alot of different forum threads on this same subject. It seems to me everyone wants to point to the vent being filled with fuel or a blockage of some sort. That would make since if it happened all the time, but mine doesn't happen all the time and there is no blockage or kinked anything. My thoughts are, and I am no expert, but I think, that the rate the fuel enters the tank has alot to do with it.

If you are pumping fuel at a high rate, if the fuel vent line is not big enough to escape the air quick enough, it will basically cause the tank to get air locked. Which in turn would explain why you can fill it slowly but not quikly. This really is all I have been able to come up with. It seems to happen more on mine after I have run hard or on warm days. This to me means there are more fumes in the tank and more pressure.

Also on mine, it seems to happen more when empty, thus again more fumes/air pressure. I may try a bigger vent line if I can get the old one out easily.

chris - That's sort of what I thought, that it has to due with the rate of fuel, but it never happened until the last two times, and that's with using a gas can, not a pump.

One thing I did find, was that after I put gas in, and if I blow into the tank from the fill, about a second or two after blowing into it, gas will shoot out. Which is why I started with the vent (air not escaping), but that didn't seem to be it. I'm stumped for now, and as I said, it'll be a while before I address this.
