Re: Its Running... 454 on stand... with video!

I overhauled and painted my motor (7.4L MPI). Did you use a shop tachometer? Which one do you have. I'm looking to purchase one. Any tips for starting the motor on the stand?

BTW HT....your bilge looks clean enough to eat on. What did you use to glass yours in? I was going to get it very clean and grease free then paint with Bilgekote. Very nicely done! I hope mine turns out half as nice. Some pics below.

Starting on the stand is pretty easy. in fact, If i ever do more engine work, I will not even hesitate to do it again. Beats the daylight out of getting it in the boat an having to repair pieces.

I used a shipping pallet, cut out the center 2 pieces to fit the oil pan.

Built up a couple of "motor mounts" using 2x4's for the fronts and rears.

I re-wired the EFI to run from the battery and ground mounts, thus my entire motor was self contained.

I continued to hang the motor from the engine hoist, and then entire pallet was on the engine hoist legs, so I could roll it around (made for great flexibility to work in the garage and start outside.

I jumped the pins on the connector to emulate the ignition and the starter, and it worked perfectly.

using a meter I validated the oil pressure earlier, using a drill, and I monitored temp with a non-touch thermometer.

I used a long suction hose to feed the water, and took the water from a trash can. the motor will pull a LOT more than my hose would supply.

Tach, I used a digital DMM for automobiles from Harbor Freight. worked pretty well. I also had an old analog one I used as well.

Joker, is that the MPI intake on top, does it pull air from the side?

the part on the very top is the plenum. It sits on the intake manifold. the part with the paper stuffed in is where the throttle body goes. Mind if I PM you if I have questions, need advice once I'm ready to start? Did you get any pics of your bilge once you painted it?

PM sure can, but others may benefit from the info.

Bilge pictures, nope, I went straight to install... damned if I did not forget to grab one.

another reminder, I removed my power steering belt since I could not connect it up.

I don't have a sperate belt for PS pump. Do I let it run with no fluid? Will that damage the pump? What are my options? Thanks.

Someone told me to NOT run it dry. someone with more knowledge than me on PS would need to answer that question.

I don't know if just piping it from out to in would work... or cause more problems.

You'll rip up the power steering pump vanes pretty quickly if you run it dry. It needs the pressure of the oil to keep the vanes from getting destroyed.

You could always get a shorter belt from autozone to remove rotation on the PS pump.
