I wanted to know about the effect of Jack plate setback . I understand the up and down part but don't understand about the different set back they come in . I seen 6 " 10" 12 " setback models and wanted to how the setback effect the boat plane and prop ? I just seen something about how they are not good on transoms is this true ? Thanks for the input !

Re: Jack Plate question ?

Setting the motor farther back from the transom puts it in better( less aerated ) water which allows your prop to bite better at higher lift on the transom. It also changes the balance point of your boat allowing you to fly the front end easier with less trim angle for more speed. Generally speaking every boat is different and responds best to different setback. The only way to know is to contact the boat builder and hope he knows or to experiment with different lengths. Generally more setback means more speed and higher motor height to a point. But, the more setback the more weight you are putting on your transom(longer lever effect). However if your transom is in good shape this should not be a problem. I have run from 6in to 12 in setbacks without a problem. Hope this helps
