I want to be clear on my comments about my 10 year old's teacher: I DONT WANT MY KIDS LIED TO.

At the core of this, that is my biggest problem. I don't send my kid to school for health and safety indoctrination, but this is much simpler than that. If the biggest killer of young people is car accidents, I want him to know that. If the biggest killer of adults is heart disease, I want him to know that.

Call me an idiot, but I don't want people to make up things to support their agenda, whether it leads to shooting up diesel fuel or chewing gum, I don't care. I'd prefer they tell my kids the truth.

You mean WMD? That kind of stuff? :)
I'm not sure that anyone can prove without a doubt what substance is the most addictive....
I will say this however.....
Have you ever seen someone who needs oxygen because they suffer from emphesema (sp), smoking a cigarette?
I have.....
JK

Are your kids being lied to QC????

From Stanford University

Tobacco a strong poison – is the most addictive of all drugs . It stimulates the same areas of the brain as cocaine and amphetamines, and tolerance to nicotine develops faster than to cocaine or heroin . Neurochemically, the body adapts to the toxins in tobacco a few hours after smoking. Soon smoking becomes necessary to feel “normal.”
Ok I'm now done with this topic now, I have said my piece. Once again I give the teacher props. JMHO

Re: Jay Bennish

Come on JK. How do you spout that without recognizing that the whole world thought he had WMD. Finding out now that he didn't does not make anybody that thought he did a liar. These words are important.

You guys have read my carp enough to know that I am more concerned with behavior than smoking. I want my kids to know that how they treat their fellow human beings is infinitely more important than "the most addictive drug in the world". Smoking does not cause people to murder, rape, molest, maim, beat etc. etc. I want more emphasis on stuff that counts. Social stigma alone is wiping out cigarette smoking, but my kid thinks that if I smoke a cigar, sitting on the beach watching a sunset that I am gonna die. How is that right?

This is definitely becoming a hijack, but the knucklehead in Colorado pointed out the great evil of tobacco while blurring the definition of terrorism. Isn't that troubling?

It was said with a smile.... :)
I think he was trying to illustrate the hypocrasy of the "do as I say, not as I do" philosophy.....
Simply put....We grow & export tobacco, so its O.K.
You grow cocaine & opium...
So we will defoliate you....JK

BTW, smoking is the fault of Native Americans if you follow Bennish's logic.

I totally agree with intellectual honesty and looking at things from all perspectives, but morality should be the basis for our decisions, not demonizing of Capitalism. If this is an our system vs. theirs debate (Bennish's), then how about the fact that ideas so far from the ideals of his country's would have found him in jail or much worse in his beloved Cuba. In the US a very bright 16 year old exposes him and he is on administrative leave and will probably keep his job.

While I am thinking about it, is this the kind of debate that has supposedly ruined Dockside Chat for some? When I started posting here this was much more common than now. Yes, I have become agitated when writing and reading, but it sure seems more like entertainment and good exercising of the mind to me than something that chases people away . . .

Calm down QC, now just calm down. ;) Learning to tell a lie from the truth is part of lifes lessons. It is a clinical fact that nicotine is more addictive than heroin. The sudden withdrawal may be more dramatic but the conquering of the addiction (not taking it up again)is where the difficulty lies. (no pun intended)

Hey Ray, (better than Fae Wray, well maybe not)

I actually looked that up too and saw some of what you say and also some hemming and hawing. One of the best things I saw was a point system that defined the addictive natures of various drugs along with the intoxicating effects, the seriousness of withdrawal, tolerance and a couple of other factors. I guess if it is purely a statement of addictiveness then the teacher was more close to the truth than I understood. I still think that our kids are getting a lot of smoke blown up their collective arses on this subject. It is interesting to me that my 10 year old has never come up to me and said, "Hey Dad, Abe Lincoln was pretty cool", "or reading is fun-damental". His choice for sharing about a lesson was nicotine. It just doesn't seem right to me.

BTW, I have never considered nicotine an intoxicant, so the drug word confuses me some. People describe a buzz etc. I never felt anything more than slightly pukey or maybe slightly dizzy . . . Is that what everybody is talking about?

Man, BTW, I am busy. I cannot believe how much time I allocate to this stuff. Like I said, entertaining and the most addictive drug in the world . . . :D

I usually don't chime in on these subjects,i do'nt have kids yet but one day soon hopefully,But in my Lack of Knowing i think the root of all this lies when they took the dicipline out of schools and away from the teachers.Grade school is not the the place for this, but with these times it's hard to ignore.I think it all starts at home, but kids do stray i did in some of the worst ways.but the values my parents gave me at a young age found there way through.I may be outplace saying these things. But the answer here is to love your kids and talk to them,I can only hope one day i'm as good of a parent as all you are.JMO

Please, check the number of high school deaths attributed to cigs then check alcohol, cocaine, crack, meth adfedimines, herion, extacy, pot, child birth.

And of course he used some numbers so this is clearly relevent to math, and chemical weapons heck chemistry class, and how they affect the body bingo biology, and I think Bush can type so typing class this is good for, and our troops are in good shape so gym class there we go. Didn't you hear the hate?

This has nothing to do with geography. This guy is as fair and balanced as ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, PBS, BBC, CNBC, AP, AIR AMERICA, ETC.

So, what's your point?.....
Funny, the only one that is legal is on top....
I would think that alchohol is at the top of that list.....
Tobacco might take alot longer, but it will most likely get you in the end....
I would say the two of them pose the greatest dangers.....
With the exception of listening to Rush.....
That is guaranteed to kill some brain cells....JK

I never heard of a nicotine addict getting aids from smoking dirty cigs. I never heard of a nicotine addict turning to a life of crime to support his habit. In my crazy mixed up backwards world I think that heroin and other hardcore drugs are far more harmful than cigs.
