Re: Jay Bennish

It seems that this guy has been dishing this out for sometime. Otherwise how would a student know exactly when to record maybe a onetime lecture?

When it is all done and over with, this teacher has jeopardized his teaching career. (At least for elementary/high schoolers). JMHO

Re: Jay Bennish

From the Denver Post: http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_3560566

Seems clear this is a pattern with this fool. It also seems the courts agree that this type of rant is "hard to defend" according to an expert when presented to high school students. They find them "impressionable" and unable to distinguish between BS and fact.

Quoted from DP:
Sean, who appeared on Rosen's show Wednesday morning, said in an interview he had been disturbed by the "political rants" he heard in Bennish's class. He added that he wanted to tape the session for his father, who later shared it with the media.

Sean, who described himself as a political independent, said the comments seemed inappropriate for a geography class.

"If he wants to give an opinion in class, I'm perfectly OK with that," he said. "But he has to give both sides of the story."

James McGrath Morris, an author who has written about academic freedom issues, said Bennish's comments are acceptable for an adult audience, but they are hard to defend in a high school classroom.

In a number of legal cases, courts have ruled that "up until the age of majority, children are easily influenced ... in a way that they don't have the faculties to sort out rights from wrongs," Morris said.

Additional reading suggestions:

http://townhall.com/opinion/columns/walterwilliams/2006/02/22/187189.html

Wasting your bandwidth Pointer.

Today things are no longer a matter of right or wrong... but Left or Right. The Left will defend this guy to the max and before all is said and done, will demonize this school kid as The Anti-Christ.

Your right KaGee, hey I think I will bring a special "celebrity" to the Wisconsin I-boats camping trip. That is if he can get a weekend pass from the warden. :D

I'll get him to play with everyones children. Talk about a learning experience. :(

They might call this kid all kinds of things but not anything to do with "Christ". Hitler thats ok, but not a word about Christ, its not sensitive.

It's not a direct corralation but it is interesting how those who support a conservative agenda are unwilling to accept the actions of Duke Cunningham and want him strung up for his actions, but a rant as offensive, inaccurate, and slanted as this, directed at "children", doesn't offend those of a more liberal stripe.

Accepting bribes is a criminal act.....
Speaking/teaching of governmental hypocrasy is not....
Methinks that if his "rant" were "Rush Limbaughian", the majority of this forum would be singing his praises.....
As I said before...the little creep (Edit to "Sneak") who taped it with out consent has a promising future in the CIA or homeland security......JK

...the little creep
So he stood up for himself, and tried to gather evidence to make his point, and he's a creep?
Wonder what he'd think of you? :D You know, cause you were so smart about that Super Bowl game & how badly Seattle would beat Pittsburgh!

Because he recorded him without his without his consent or knowledge.....
Hopefully, it would not have made a difference.....
I will edit to say "Sneak"....
"Creep" was my visceral reaction.....
"Sneak" is a more apt description....
Frankly, I'm suprised that it garnered so much attention from the "Liberal, Left wing" biased media..... ;) ....JK

It didn't garner any attention until the talk radio circuit got a hold of it, then the local paper and even the miopic national media could see what a sick person this is.

Again, what is sneaky about taping an instructor other than to make your point? Why are you attempting to demonize a child? Why would you not tape a Publically Paid Instructor, by someone who is paying his salary. Heck, in this way his message has reached so many. He is currently the most well know teacher in the country. I bet he is proud. Even if he did know I am sure that based on the rightousness of this mans message he wouldn't have changed his lecture at all. And if he did, what does that say about the instructor. If I were a shrink in the area, I would be sizing up a new BMW as this is one sick puppy.

Recording someome without their knowledge or consent is just plain sneaky,IMHO.....
Especially if you do it knowing that you intend it to be rebroadcast .....
It is beside the point, though....
I don't think it would have mattered anyway because......
Even if he did know I am sure that based on the rightousness of this mans message he wouldn't have changed his lecture at all.

Just because you don't agree with someone, doesn't necessarily make you right......JK

No the fact I disagree with him doesn't make him wrong.

The fact that he presented inaccurate information, in an inappropriate class, in violation of the schools written policy of presenting all points of view, and deviating from the lesson plan or lying about them makes him wrong.

It is also unethical to present the lies in his rant as truths. But ethical and teacher seem to be more and more mutually exclusive these days. Unless you think having sex with your students is just another learning opportunity. Try pulling a stunt like this in any other profession and I can recommend a few good dish's you can make with government cheese. It's unacceptable.

FWIW the little "creep" recorded this for his father not for publication. But clearly by your own evaluation he wasn't mature enough for this type of material. But once again, why wouldn't you be alloweded to record an instructors lectures? All good instructors research their lectures to ensure accuracy. There are camera's in thousands of schools and subsequently even more classrooms. But I am sure every school district is chomping at the bit to hire this idiot.

The key to overcoming tobacco addiction (nicotine) lies in the age at which use begins, how deeply you inhale and the frequency of exposure. Sounds as though you were pulling a slick willy most of the time. ;) Don;t tell me that the first cigarette didn't give you a buzz. If it didn't then you were pulling a slick willy.

Techno, I am ready to quit, I started at 20 and probably smoke a pak or more a day. I would probably descibe myself as a shallow inhaler. Whats my pain level in quitting?

1 and out please, I don't want to derail the thread.

Pointer, I estimate your pain to be on a scale similar to that of pulling your manhood out through your back door. Have a nice day.

What. You think you are going to kick the most powerful addiction in the world and it will be like pulling a nose hair? We've already heard the testimony from the experts above....

Besides, if some lunatic raving teacher says it's so... it must be so!

Re: Jay Bennish

One day after 25years of smoking camel no filters my dad just quit. Never a whine or a complaint. I noticed one day he just didn't do it anymore. He said he quit. Never explained if it was difficult or not, just it was his brain and he's in control.

But my dad is an extra-ordinary man. He wasn't one to complain ever, and as much as it urks me to say this -- he's a liberal. But he was on the ciriculum advisory committee for two districts and I assure you he would have snapped a twig over this Bennish guy.

Well, it would depend on how old you are now. I started smoking regularly at around 20 and had smoke some prior to that. During those years I was like Mark Twain. It was easy to quit I did it a thousand times. After joining the service it became a regular thing with no thought of quitting. Marriage, children, commuting, were relieved by smoking. I had always regretted the fact that I had taken up smoking and by the time I had been smoking heavily for fifteen years I developed a nagging cough and my wife boldy states that she is not going to buy me anymore cigarettes. Since I am such a tight-wad the rest was history. I can say that the urges remained for many years and that though there wass no phyisical "pain" I could bite the head of a rattler at the least provocation. I have since built a "smoke house" with the money saved by not buying cigarettes. My wife however continues to smoke and hack about 20 hours a day. Quit now. And if you take it up again. Quit, Quit, quit again.
