Jet boat engine trailer/out of water start

Hi I have a 98 sunbird sizzler jet boat. I just learned that when winterizing in cold climates you have to use anti-freeze -- the interesting thing is that it looks like you have to disconnect some hoses and put it in manually and there is no real cap or twist cover to undo and just put it in

Anyway, my question is where and how do I start it out of the water? Do I need flush adaptor kit?

I'm new to all of this, I'll post pictures soon

Sort of the wrong time of year for winterizing but Is it a closed cooling system?

Most of us drain our blocks, manifolds and power steering cooler on Mercruisers without adding antifreeze, the main reason is air won't freeze but trapped pockets of water or diluted antifreeze will.

you do realize it is currently spring. the time to winderize is before cold weather hits.

As stated previously, probably won't do you any good to winterize now. You should also check for damage before dunking it if it has sat all winter improperly stored. On those jet engines, I believe there is a port somewhere inside that you hook a hose to. You may need to remove a hose to run it out of the water. Check your manual and it should clearly state how to run the boat out of the water.

It can and should be run out of water, especially to flush if used in salt water. It does have a flush fitting that merely has to be connected to a hose. Look on the outtside just above the jet pump for a regular hose fitting.

Yes, a hose needs to be disconnected and AF manually poured in with a funnel. If that wasn't done and it froze you got a problem.

Obviously, you need an owner's manual with pictures rto identify where the parts are

I'm not planning on winterizing it right now --- I was just trying to figure out the easiest way to put the antifreeze in there ----- but what I really want to know about is out of the water engine start and how to do it

My guess is that this engine picks up raw water to cool like my inboard Mastercraft, which has a screened inlet on the bottom of the hull. You can either buy an adapter that mounts over the water intake with the garden hose or remove the intake hose and place in a bucket and run. Beware that it sucks water down fast, you can also use this method to add the antifreeze to the block. Just put it in the bucket and let it suck it up. Don't know anything about the actual jet pump, if you have to drain it, etc.

First you find the female hose npt thread fitting and connect a water hose. Then you start the engine, then you turn on the water, then you turn off the water, then you turn off the motor. The sequence must be followed exactly as stated or you may flood the engine internals with water.

Find the make and model of the engine and serial number, etc. Google that info and find an owners manual. Its all easy peasy but you need the pictures to locate the parts.

I just googled it myself and found that your boat was made ovber the years with 3 different engine types. So, nobody can help you unless you know what it is.

I just took a bunch of pictures but now the site won't let me upload them because they are too big -- any possibility the site can update it's upload capacity?

So it says I need a flushing adapter but where does it go?

There should be a cooling system section of that manual which will tell you what hose to pull or where the fitting to connect to is. You appear to be looking in the storage section right now.

I was thinking I could plug this adaptor where that white jug looking thing is in one of my pictures --- in place of it --- what do you think?

I think the white jug thing is the sea water filter, did you disconnect it from a hose that goes into the motor? Be sure to clean that filter out too. Normally you just dump it out. The water hose hook up for our work jet boat is inline with the filter.

just noticed you have a primer bulb... Those are a no-no for inboard engines, as they tend to eventually develop a pin hole and leak. They are NOT USCG legal... In any case, I'd just make sure the bulb is in good shape and replace it every 2-3 years or so, BEFORE it leaks!

The cooling water inlet hose should come off the tunnel above the intake grate. Find that hose and trace it to the engine, looking for a fitting along the way.

Could elaborate more on that please? On finding the fitting

Also my starter is stuck on the flywheel I think it is called --- the large circular plate on top the engine

Should I try to start anyway?

No don't try to start it it won't do anything but make a sound you won't like hearing. Also you don;t have any water going to the motor.

While the drive gear is up there spray some lubricant on the starters drive shaft that the gear is attached to. Wipe it clean and apply some more. If the teeth are meshed then with a soft blow mallet (not a steel hammer) lightly tap down on the end of the drive gear nut until it retracts. You may have to spin the flywheel too to get it to let go.

I can see it stuck up in the pic you posted earlier.

That's a dangerous little setup you got there. Looks like an outboard with the cowl removed. That flywheel is a finger biter, and I don't mean a little pinch. While you're manipulating things to get the starter to disengage, be sure the battery is disconnected and wear heavy leather gloves. The starter gear isn't the only thing that will take a finger off.
