My new girlfriend has carpal tunnel syndrome and has a real hard time using her hands.
She is going to lose her job due to it.
So I told her I would help her find a job that does not require her to use her hands too much.
It's not like she can't use her hands at all, but after working a while, she just can't move her hands or fingers.
She can type and has office skills and is very good at woodworking.
So, we think she is going to have to go on disability, but that is not enough to pay her bills.
She is devistated about all of this.
Sugery is going to be an option, but in the meantime, I want to help her figure out what she can do for a job.
Sales is an option, and so is real estate, but I can't think of much more.
Does anyone have any other ideas I can throw her way?
Thanks,I would appreciate any input anyone has.
B.C.

Had a girlfriend in the same situation. She even had a hard time eating because she would keep dropping the fork full of food.

Her only way out was to have the surgery.
She types like crazy now.

I would push for the surgery before she goes on a long term disability.
(Not sure how the system works in Canada)

Lots of jobs for smart young women.
Of course a lot depends on her skills, the local job market, and how much she needs to make.
Customer service rep.
Service writer, (like a counter person at an auto shop.)
Lawn care service.
Insurance sales.
Landscape designer.
Bartender.
Golf Caddy.
Hotel desk clerk.
Housekeeping - residential, office, stores, hotels, etc.

I'm sure the 2 of you will come up with something.

I just had surgery for that and am recovering well. The hand works better and does not go numb any more. Hope to return to work this month.

Re: Jobs without physical duties....

First off I'd wish her well and hope that she really pushes for the surgery. It's relatively quick and easy and with an excellent success rate.

Secondly I'd get her to push for the surgery due to the statistical chances of returning to work following long term disability. UK figures show 3 months off you have a 25% chance of never returning to work, that after 12 months you have a 60% chance of never returning to work and after 24 months disability you are 98% likely never to return to work

Posts requiring no upper limb use aren't that common now thanks to the use of computers so you're really going to struggle to find something. Here's hoping that someone can come up with a more answers for her.

Now the other point I would raise is doesn't Canada have a Disability Discrimination Act? Her employer should be (but check with someone) legally bound to make "reasonable adjustments" to allow her to continue in employment. I'd also investigate why this has occured: is it an industrial injury/disease and are the employers partly responsible?

In the meantime: get the surgery done!

Have a good friend that had this in both hands. My suggestion, have the surgery. BUT if she needs both hands, don't do what my friend did. Do one at a time.

Re: Jobs without physical duties....

The problem with her hands is not because of any work related issue.
The next problem is she just started a new job a week ago and she is having real problems doing her job. She works at a golf ball printing place and has to package 100's of golf balls a day.
If her boss is understanding, maybe she can get her surgery done and go back to work.

For the people who have had this surgery done....how long is the healing process post surgery?
She would like to hear some stories about people who have had this done. She is also scared about the surgery.

Thanks for the replies so far.
B.C.
