Wondering if anyone can offer some help here. I have a 1986 johnson V4 110hp that I am currently working on. Last summer the owner ran it in thick seaweed and overheated it.

I gave it a once over and got it going again. Compression is still good, new impeller, new plugs, new head gasket on one cylinder bank. It is passing water somewhere into on of the cylinders. I replaced the head gasket again and still the same. I can see no cracks in the cylinders or head. Is there someplace else I am getting the water from that I am overlooking????

The water is prob getting in past the exhaust gaskets between the heads.

I though of that but then I wondered if the exhaust side would pull water back while pushing out exhaust....????

Absolutey. Even on the exhaust side of things, there are still negative pressure pulses and depending on where the gasket is not sealing it may simply be pushing the coolant past the gasket into the cylinder. Hope the info helps.

Yeah it does help. I will have to tear into it again and see what I find. I guess that the exhaust gaskets could have burned up running with no water when the pick up was jammed with seaweed.....

As long as you are going to remove both exhaust manifolds, you might want to pull the thermostat housing apart. It's is really convenient with the manifolds off. You should consider replacing both stats. Check the pressure relief valves. Sometimes these nylon valves will distort with heat and cause cooling problems.

Technically, on a 110 the inner is the mainifold, the outer is the cover. Removal of both makes working on the thermostat a lot easier. On a flatback they are both called covers.

OK, makes more sense now. I was wondering about the exhaust manifold thing.
