Re: Johnson 115 1995 3 or 4 blade prop

Thanks guys for your input I really appreciate it. I have changed over to XD50 oil in all my motors because i like the way it doesn't smoke as much and doesn't foul the plugs. I have been running it no more than half trim and just keeping it at or below 5500 rpm. It will do more than that with this prop easy. It will really turn around 6000 rpm if I trim it all the way up and give it WOT but I only use it to pull us so the prop really yanks us out of the water now. I will just continue to run it no more than 5500 RPM as that is all we need on this boat. I have my bass boat when I want to run 60+ lol. It doesn't seem to be hurting the motor any at all. I am usually running it around 3500 to 4000 when we are pulling and it seems to be better on gas now.

I'm going to chime in here and recommend that you(and everyone else) adhere to the manufacturer's stated WOT rpm range.

I'm not sure why some folks think that it's OK to tell others that it won't hurt anything to over speed their engines.

I think the OP made it clear that he was capable of reading boiler plate.

He wanted real world experience on the longevity of the rotating mass assembly.

Our experience began in the 1960's as an Evinrude Dealership. We've built countless V4's - both 90deg and 60deg. and locally raced everything but V8's.

We were also part of the OMC study in the 70's that determined, running the V4 at higher rpms eliminated the coking problem that was killing the lower revved engine very prematurely. We've been, "Around the Block" so to speak with that engine.

The better oils of today, have essentially solved the problem.

OMC and BRP were well aware of the benefits of the slightly higher revving setups.

Just because an engine can safely rev to 6000, doesn't mean you want to sell that platform. There are other parameters as well that sell an outboard and affects customer satisfaction.

Now we know, "Why these folks think that it's OK...".

FWIW -XD50 is a good oil choice. Excellent protection and works very well to minimize/eliminate carbon buildup. If you decide to try xd100, you'll need to do a decarb 1st. It will literally flake off the carbon, which can sometimes cause problems. I'm not suggesting that you should switch.

Glad you're not, "Eating Water" any longer on deep water starts!

Thanks for the info. This is exactly the kind of info I was after guys. Knowing I might accidentally hit over 5500 sometimes. Just wanted to know it would be ok and not blow up the engine. Sounds like the way I run it will be very ok. Also I had read somewhere that running a prop that allowed the engine to turn over the RPM at WOT would hurt the engine even if you where not running it at that. Which really didn't make any sense at all to me.

Thanks for the info. You guys are great.
