i understand that ac voltage from stator goes to the rectifier and changed to dc then to battery to charge . one would think that the positive would go to regulator to be regulated then to battery however my diagram, best i can see + goes straight to battery + therefore my question how does it get regulated thanks again :der:

its doesn't get regulated on the older motors. It uses the battery as a sink which isn't a great idea. Its kinda crude but you can switch on something to get the voltage to drop when it gets to high. You have to remember that the old outboards had a real low amp output. Once you minus the power required to run the motor there wasn't much left over to overcharge the battery

forgot to add that I have seen posts where people are talking about a upgrade to a regulator that regulates so that may be a option

I'm far from being versed w Johnson's but,. If this is the beast pictured below, It appears from some quik misc. impromptu blog searches, this pic and color codes on the unit itself, it should be both....AC in and regulated DC out.

Do you have a copy(or a link) of the print you're looking at you could post?

Edit...hold the phone!! I see what you're after and why, I found the the print of your system I think, cool. i'll post it if I can and explain.

tblsur,

Check your PM's. Doesn't look as if the image went so I'll try to post the accompanying image here(or below, lol) as well.

sam thank you so much. a diagram that i can at least see, please correct me if im wrong, does this mean that the regulator adds a load to the stator to control the voltage kinda like glen said older ones would turn on a light or something to control the voltage rise. if this is correct it makes sence even to me:clap2:
