Model number FD-15F is a 1961 18hp Johnson. Use either Champion J4C or J6C plugs gapped at .030. The J6C might produce improved perforamce. Try both.

Did someone by chance remove that philips screw in the lower unit skeg for some reason? If so, that allowed the internal shift lever to drop down off of that screw which is actually a shoulder type bolt pivot pin.

Other than that, as Tash states above, the shift linkage is at fault.

I don't think so he bought boat and motor as a package deal and put his motor on it. They had a problem in the past with it. It was suppose to have been fixed. The 18 Had never been run by him until now.

Strider...... If that's a question, elaborate on it somewhat.

Sorry, I see shorthand on here all the time and can't figure out what you guys are talking about. I look in the service manual, but don't always find the answer. I'm not posting that often, but read here when I can to learn.

Ok, lower unit. I understand Thats the gearbox/differential/transmision. Transfers power from the shaft to the prop. I've gathered leg is the generic phrase for pretty much everything below the power head. But what is a skeg? Is that a particular kind of leg? Oh you get the point ...

Thanks

the skeg is the little fin below the prop. It protects against hitting bottom and rocks and logs and lions and tigers and bears and making prop go foom.

Thanks. Sorry, I thought it was slang. I actually looked it up in my owners manual, and indeed there it was. Curious to the oddity of the word I had to look it up. It's an old mariners term derived from the scandinavian word (skegg) for beard. The pre-outboard reference was for the sternward extension of the keel on ships that had the rudder mounted on the centerline. Golly.

Seems like fin would be easier.

Yes, some boaters use the terminology "leg" to describe anything below the powerhead but I really hate that. There's the powerhead, adapter plate assy, exhaust housing, and the lower unit. Someone states they need a leg, I'd be directing them to medical facility.

As "Iwombat" states, the skeg which is the proper name, is the fin just below the gearbox (section of the gearcase that holds the gears etc) whether it is the type that's attached with screws or actually part of the lower unit.

Finn is Scandinavian too, but I don't think you'd want a Finn attached to your outboard. As you probably well know, they have a tendency to raid the cheese when you're not looking.
