Johnson 150 Ocean Pro issue

I have a strange issue with my Johnson 150 (year 2000). I bought the boat last year about this time and put almost a full tank of gas in the boat. It started fine, and would run fine while traveling to my fishing location (about 10 miles). When I would shut off the engine, it would start, but cough, sputter, and stall if I did not get it in gear almost right away (get the RPMs up). After several tanks of gas, it was doing the same thing. At the end of the season, I drained all of the gas, and put fresh gas in the boat this year. It had the same behavior.

I took it to a local authorized dealer and he could not find anything wrong with the motor. He changed the spark plugs, and added a fuel/water filter. He could not reproduce the behavior. I had it out today for the first time since it was in the shop and it is still doing the same thing, maybe a little worse.

Once I get it over about 1000 RPMs is runs fine, but sometimes starts to sputter and stall when I reduce the RPMs under 1000. Often it won?t stay running long enough to get the RPMs up to where it won?t stall.

It always starts right up when it has not been running for 3 or 4 hours, and runs just fine in the driveway at home. After 10 minutes of running it in the driveway, I shut it down, wait 30 minutes and it starts right up and still runs fine. I cannot get it to act up at home no matter what I do.

I spun the fuel/water filter off and dumped it into a large glass. There is no visible at all in the fuel. At this point, I?m thinking that the fuel is not the issue.

Does anybody have any idea what I can try next?

Could a faulty fuel pump cause this? Some of the research I?ve done indicate that a bad fuel ?bladder? (whatever that is) may cause this to happen all of the time.

Could this be an electrical issue? Maybe the coil going bad?

Any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. I?m at the point that I?m afraid to take the boat out on the water :confused:

Thanks, Dave

Re: Johnson 150 Ocean Pro issue

I had the boat at Intercostal Marine for a week (after a 3 week wait to get the boat in the shop. Terry could not find anything wrong. He indicated that he could not reproduce the problem. That is kind of a kick in the head at $115.00!

That is 2 certified Johnson mechanics and neither one could find anything wrong. I had it out on the water today and if is still doing the same thing - maybe worse.

I'm starting to wonder if it may be related to sediment in the tank causing the screen to clog while I'm running and then it not getting enough fuel when it is first started up after running a while. I'm even thinking that this is a long shot...

Had a similar problem.Found a rag in my tank.Sounds like it only does it on the water.Try hooking up a remote fuel tank and take it for a ride.If it smhat ooths out.Your tank is your problem.Rag or similar item. What grade of gas are you using?

Re: Johnson 150 Ocean Pro issue

The difference is at home there is no load when running on the hose.
In the water its under load.

Ya think those mechanics really went to the trouble of putting it in the test tank or just put a hose on it? Right.!

its timing , link/sync or carbs.
Get a timing light and make sure its sparking on all cyl's.

check the ignition advance like this,

if all checks out, order the johnson factory service manual
the carb rebuild kits and do it yourself in 2 hrs or less.

Check the ignition with a peak reading meter. Engine needs to be in water in gear, full throttle comming up on plane. You have to check each cylinder. Easy to do, No guess work. Ask the tech if they even check the pack output at idle.

I usually use 87. Last time I was on the water I filled up with 89 and it made no difference.

I think I will try the remote tank idea...

It is not trimmed up at all when it starts to act up. There is no reason to have it tilted at all where I fish. The only time it is tilted is at the ramp when backing it into the water and then again right before I pull it out of the water on the trailer.

Thanks, Dave

Carb service,
Link and sync,
Adjust idle.

Just my humble opinion though.

The diff in 87 and 89 is not enough for your eng. to notice. Please try the high test your eng. WILL idle better and be alot more efficient. When you try the remote tank use the high test. The lower grade fuel does not work as good as it used too.FACT not FICTION.Too many additives.Since your complaint is about no load at idle in the water.
