I read a thread by bluebunny SS from April 13/09 and was hoping for a conclusion because it is exactly what happened to my friends CJ15RLCO motor. We puttered on the chuck with the motor and as we opened it up it over heated. I went to replace the pump/impeller and noticed it was in good shape except for the grommet had a small tear so I replaced it and reassembled and started it. It still dribbled and as I applied gas it began to trickle. Not good enough, so I replaced the whole pump. I sprayed water through the copper pipe and water streamed out the pee hole nicely. I checked the intake and it was clear. I assembled the pump reusing (#40 on the gearcase diagram) the plastic sleeve and did not add the O-ring (it looks like it is only used on the 5" extension model). I put the impeller in the same way as the old one and understand that it would correct itself if it was put in wrong. I did not use any sealant (I understand you don't have to) and did grease the shaft. I aligned all parts and it I fit the LU together with ease. I fired it up and it still just dribbles. The 3" hose to the pee hole is in good shape. Help!!!

check the thermostat

if you pinched the grommet on the water tube, it will restrict flow.

If it was on ears that may be your problem.

Changed my pump last year and it would barely move water on muffs but pumps great on the water so I would try it in water before you get too carried away.

May sound like a silly question, but is the pee hose plugged?

Thanks for the instant replies. OK, I have put a pen at the end of a garden hose and placed it on the pee hole with the lower unit off. A stream of water comes directly out of the copper tube. I reverse it and put the pen on the copper tube and a good stream comes out the pee hole. If it was a thermostat would it not be closed when the engine is cold? Does the thermostat open when hot and let water through? Do the thermostat and pee hole work together? A stupid question but I am in a rush to have some beers with a buddy from Australia (no time to see how the thermostat works in relation to tell tale). Oh yeah, there is a film of the copper tube in the grommet and I ran the engine in a barrel. Any other ideas?

Water goes from the pump direct to the pee hole so water at the pee hole is not an indication of good cooling, only that your pump is pumping. Not sure what you mean about copper film in the water pump grommet. Make certain your leg is well covered in water. Often times people say it won't pump only to find it pumps fine once they put enough water in the barrel. Rick.

Gingerly put her together for the third time and added a few cases of beer (8") to the barrel and val la she is pissing a good stream all the time. Thanks.

Eight inches of beer seems like a waste but to save the life of another OMC motor..It's worth the cost. Glad it worked. Rick.
