I have a 1985 Johnson 150hp 2cyl V6 that was recently having problems keeping a steady RPM range when running around 50 mph. It would drop the RPMs and then regain. I think I noticed another topic on this one.

Anyway, I took it out today and I stopped once and was never able to get the engine going again. It wouldn't even crank over a bit. I noticed oil of some kind and a skim in the water. Not small, but a lot and when I finally got it out of the water it was dripping everywhere from right under the engine, but up on the top back side of the lower unit. I opened the cover, but not being mechanical, I couldn't exactly tell where this was coming from.

Does anyone have any ideas so that when I take it to get looked at I can have some type of clue.

Thanks to all and happy new year.

Not a mechanic, what is the VRO and what should I be looking for?

If so, would this be something easy to replace and a do it yourself kind of thing.

thanks

dusty - Many, if not most, things can be fixed by the average driveway mechanic on these older motors. It does however require some knowledge, tools and preferably the OMC shop and parts manuals. From your post my sense is that you would be better off taking it to a marine mechanic.

If you have an interest start by buying the manuals and doing some of the simple maintenance things yourself.

The problem you describe could be relatively simple to fix or it could be complicated and expensive depending on the result of troubleshooting.

Dusty,

Take SoLittle's advise!
I am mechanically inclined, but outboard motors are new to me. I just spent 3 hours this afternoon doing a repair that would have taken my local boat mechanic 1 hour.

That works out to be:
$75 for his labor or two busted knuckles, a fat lip, and a bunch of words I will be praying for forgiveness tonight.

I enjoy learning how to fix things, but sometimes it is worth every nickel to have a pro do the job. Besides, boat mechanics have to eat too!
