Johnson 1990 model GT100 impeller replacement

I need help in trying to change an impeller on my GT100 hp Johnson...I removed all the bolts on the gearcase but the shift rod and pin under the head have me confused ????? I don't see a way to remove or even get to the pin????

I believe that model is supposed to have a clip that you pull from the starboard side, then you push the shift lever towards the center to release the shift rod.

We almost pulled the pin yesterday but weren't sure what it would do...but I didn't feel that it had any play in it to move ??????
I know we wasted 31/2 hours on it .Thanks for the help !!!!!
