My '79 Johnson 35 is overcharging: 14.5 Volts at idle, almost 17 volts crusing. What controls the output on these motors, is there a voltage regulator?

Your system is unregulated, make sure all connections are clean, and tight. If your battery has wing nuts, change to stainless steel or brass nuts. The system only puts out 6 amps, so overcharging is not likely. Poor connections could cause overheating of the charging components.

I never new they did unregulated. UGH. Keep putting in the distilled water or put a switch somewhere with a voltmeter across the battery. Flip it on and off when needed. Mechanical type job.

Replace the battery and your problem will be solved. It doesn't have a regulator.

Do not put any switch between batteri and charging circuit. First time you run it with switch off you will fry rectifier. If you have lights or anything power consumpting, run it now and then, while boating.
