I've had trouble w/ my '73 Johnson 40hp lately. It runs well at lower speed, but when I attempt to go faster, the prop seems to lose its grip on water and engine revs up really high, almost like it has slipped out of gear.
The prop's a little dinged up, but otherwise OK. Shaft seems to be straight. Shift controls seem to be working well.

You got a spun prop or hub, (same thing) bring it to a prop repair place they can fix it in fve minutes for under 30 bucs :)

Re: Johnson 40 losing grip on water

Thanks for your tip.
I took it to a prop guy earlier this summer when it initially acted up (after I hit something in the river) and they said it was OK. I checked it again yesterday and the inner hub doesn't appear to be loose inside, maybe a 1/2 inch of play. I just took it out again today and it didn't act up at all, although I kept it at half-throttle.
Maybe I'll just buy a new prop and use the old one as a back up unless you think it's definitely spun, then I'll try and find someone who can fix it.

I'd get the new prop. That way you'll have a spare and find out if the prop hub is really slipping or not.

c/6

Hooty

It's spun, you should have a back up though
