I never check the readings from a coil, the only real test is if it works when the motor is running, switch them and see what happens.

Stator is not the issue if one has spark. Swap coils as stated above. If issue doesn't move replace pack

Might check at the marina again. The shop might have a cd2 unit they use for testing, and might swap it in to test -- if you already talked to them, you may have looked into options. I would also swap coils as described and see what your get. ("Within tolerances" doesn't sound too promising. If you find by switching them that one is bad, I think I would replace them both.)

Thanks for the responses guys. It seems that the coils are joined (orange wires go into one plug with 3 wires total. The third being black with a yellow stripe.) and if I replaced one I would have to replace both regardless. Also since they are joined will swapping them harm the timing for the sake of this test?

Let's see. Need to switch sockets for the top and bottom coil wires (both orange) in the connector, then switch plug wires between plugs (at the plugs). Coils don't have to switch locations.

Ok I can see what you are talking about. However with these old wires I'm not sure it's worth the risk of ripping them out of that socket because they don't look like they're coming out easily. Is it more likely the coil or powerpack went out and I guess I'll just replace that first. Thanks

The amphenol connectors are pretty easy to work with (some WD-40 or electrical cleaner to lubricate). But when you say the coils are "within tolerances", I wonder if maybe they are both less than perfect (even if it turned out they are both working). My guess is that it's the power pack, but guessing with your money. If you go to the marina, though, they should be able to tell you with some confidence if it's a coil or power pack, maybe for a half hours work.

Most places would charge more for the diagnosis than what the coil will cost. Don't worry about the wires, it's an easy fix if one pulls out, and if they're bad they need some attention anyhow. I've had several motors of this vintage, coils go bad more than power packs, but I've had both go out.

Update on the problem. Ordered an OMC powerpack. Install was very easy. She started up first time and runs like a champ. Thanks everyone for the help.
