A present to me was a old 6hp jonhson.
They told me she is old and .....
Ok now I have a partly restored Johnson 6 hp its the 50 aniverseties model and happy, it runs fine the last 3 running hours. I changed some thinges but my major queustion is : how do I adjust the ignition timing. The model I have is old and a lot of parts are interchanchable with the 6-8 hp evinrude ,but the exact numbers are not known to me.
Is there a low hp ignition advisor along our group??? I am looking forward to the figures about ignition timing and what is the diff between the 6hp and 8hp series .I know its not just a carburburator and exhaust solution. OK any advce om the 6 ignition pls reply

Hello, Manjeviek.

Welcome to iboats. :)

The first step is to identify the model. If you post the model number we can do that.

The best next step is to acquire a Service Manual.

Good luck. :)

Re: johnson 6 hp build 1970 or so

Hi D,
If in fact your motor is a 1970 or so model, then it does NOT have an 8hp brother to bump up to. If it happens to be from the 1980s onward family of 6-8hp twins, then it could be, but not easily. The intake on the 1980s 6hp has three leaf petals per cylinder, while the 8hp has four. The crankcase is a different casting to accomodate this, and it's not recomended that you swap just the crankcase face as it is machined with the block to achieve a custom fit.
If you motor is the 1970s version, then there really isn't much to worry about on the timing as long as the points are gapped at .020" (not sure what that works out to in Metric). The 1980s version would have electronic ignition. These small outboards are basically self-timing from there...
Hope that helps.
- Scott
