1990 Johnson 60 hp (ex VRO):

There is a square panel on each side of the lower unit with four bolts. Are they both to access the shift shaft connector when removing the lower unit? My manual (Seloc) does not have a diagram of this condition. Usually there is only one one the starboard side.

I removed one of the panels to reveal a large hard rubber piece like some kind of shock absorber. I am trying to drop the lower unit to replace the water pump and am looking for the shift shaft joint connection. Is it behind the rubber piece?

Put the mounts back together. The disconnect is up below the carburetors. Watch the mechanism as you shift. You will see a small lever that pulls the shift rod up and down. There is a hex headed pin going into the Port side of that lever. Remove that hex headed pin.

Thanks F R. I found it. How in the heck do you even access that location? How much if this engine do I need to take apart just to change the water pump?

This design does not exactly encourage regular maintenance.......and I thought the Mercruiser engineers were wack.....!

On my '88 60hp Johnson, I take the starter off, that open up access to the linkage enough to make it alot easier to remove and put back together.

Thanks for the replies.
I removed the lower carburator and the VRO fuel pump. I can see the bolt that clamps the lever to the remote shift cross bar, and I can see the end of the bolt/pin that connects the lever to the shift rod from the port side. However, I can not see the other end of that bolt (which would be turned from the starboard side using a flexible socket attachement). I would need to do it blind, I guess.

Does anyone know what size socket it would take?

There is no "other end". Go to http://shop.evinrude.com/
Click on electronic parts catalog and follow the prompts till you get to the linkage for your motor. Blow it up to 1:1 for a good view.

F R: I just saw that using a mirror. In looking at the diagram from Evinrude(crankcase), which shows the shift lever, etc. the part that is different on my engine is that #103 is not a screw, but just a pin. The part #69 (lever)clamps onto the shift lever via the screw #26. Do I just loosen the clamp and slide the lever to port enough to disengage the vertical shift rod, or does the screw need to come all the way out? What keeps the pin in place? In the Seloc book's diagram , it looks like the pin may be attached to the lever.


As an alternate, if the cotter pin is removed from the shift lever where it passes through the starboard bracket, could the shift lever bar be pushed to port about 1/4" with the clamped lever attached, enough to pull the pin through the vertical shift rod? Seems too easy....

Well, it turns out that my "alternate" was the way to go! I had been making it all too difficult.

Even a blind pig finds a truffle eventually.

I can get mine in and out by putting the throttle in reverse..it puts the shift shaft connector forward so it is easy to remove the bolt and then put the bolt back in.

You shouldnt need to remove the starter to get there. I dont even remove any of the carbs. I do take the fuel pump/VRO loose so I can move down in there a little to see.

Long extensions work nicely and some patience.

Once I figured it out, I realized that I did not need to remove the lower carb, or remove the clamped lever screw.

Pushing the shift lever to port disengages the pin connecting the vertical shift rod. For reinstall, I will need to move the fuel/VRO pump to be able to realign the pin with the shift rod hole before pulling the shift lever to starboard to re-engage the pin.
