I'm bringing a 1967 6HP Johnson back to life (model CD-24D). It's running, but rough, so I want to remove and clean the carburetor. It looks strait forward, except for the pull start mechanism that is blocking one of the carburetor mounting bolts. The spring in that thing is impressively tight! What's the easiest/safest way to remove the pull start hardware so that I can access the carburetor bolts? Or is there a top secret way to remove the carburetor without removing the pull start hardware?

Actually it is very simple. Just remove the two bolts holding the top end of the starter. Then pull it upward just enough to disengage the lower bearing, and tilt it to one side. Don't worry, it isn't going to fly apart if you only lift it that far. Now you can access the carb nut.

"JUST ENOUGH" in the above post is very important!

Thanks guys, I tackled this today and it worked exactly like you said! Cleaning out the carburetor did not fix the rough running problem (it was actually spotless in there much to my surprise), but it came off and went back on surprisingly easily. I almost let the spring genie out of the bottle, but kept my composure and got it all back together. :) Thanks again!

did you just clean the carb...or clean it and give it a kit? compression #'s?

I dismantled it and shot carb cleaner and compressed air through every hole I could find. I did not put a kit in it, but I did notice that the float was cork so I should probably at least replace that. It was stored without gas, so there wasn't anything at all in the carb except a few bits from the float. Otherwise it was spotless, I was surprised.

I haven't had it on a boat yet, just in a water tank, but it's got the same roughness (random misses) regardless of throttle opening, at least as much as I dare open it in a water tank. It is smoothest at slow idle, and it idles best with the low speed fuel screw less than 1-turn out. 1/4 turn in either direction on the fuel screw makes a noticeable difference in the idle, 1/2 turn either way causes it to stall. I'll have to get the compression numbers. I figured my next move would be to check the clearance of the points and the timing, unless you think the carb could still be the issue? As best I can remember, it ran great when I put it away 20 years ago, so whatever happened is likely a result of long storage.

You need to get into the ignition to fix that miss. Could be points or plugs...or something else.

Got the compression numbers; 85psi top and 89psi bottom. Is that in the normal range for these old motors? The motor was stone cold at this point, I didn't have time to warm it up.

Those are good numbers.

Thanks.. I ordered a puller so that I can remove the flywheel to check the points and I'll get some new plugs too. I don't see an obvious way to synchronize the timing advance with the throttle. There doesn't seem to be any adjustment? Is this a fixed setting?
