I have a 1966 johnson 6hp and when running on the boat at high rpm it will jump out of gear and into neutral. I'm aware that it's the dog clutch in the gearbox being worn and I could take it apart and turn it around but while I was running i could just hold it in gear with my hand and it ran fine. My question is could I just make a strap of some sort to hold the gear lever in place while running and it would just stop it jumping out of gear that way?

Step #1 is to make sure the upper and lower shift rods are assemble correctly at the brass connecter.----What does oil in lower unit look like.-----Rubber hub in propeller could be slipping.----Keep using it and repairs will just cost more.

I've dropped the lower unit countless of times for general maintenance and the shift linkage is connected correctly at the brass connector from my knowledge. I've just replaced the gear box oil but the old oil was clean, no metal or brass fragments and free from water. And im not sure what rubber hub youre referring to
