Hi, i just restored 1975 6hv johnson, its quite nice and no vibration on tiller at all... i like it.
But it has no stop button, just turn gas so much off that it stops. When iam fishing, i start and stop a lot, then turning that gas on and off is frustrating. So question is where i can put safely a separate stop switch that it wont hurt that old ignition system? ignition coils to ground on stop? is it safe that way?

Second question is that are these engines really built that way that it wont stay up when stop driving? it has 4 different drive position, and it can be locked down when driving, but not up position. that is weird. i have shallow shore and i have to put some stick in to it to hold it up : D

The kill switch is wired to the points... and the motor should stay up if you tighten the nut on the long bolt running through the transom bracket where the motor pivots.

You would need to run two wires through armature plate..one connected to each pointset. Distal ends of wires to stop button. You may need to drill armature plate base to run wires, and drill lower cowl for stop button.
Following is a photo of a shallow drive arm. I have seen them on similar year 25hp’s They did not come standard..perhaps you could find one?

On your 2nd question, some older 6hp OMC's (example my 1969 6R69M) the design did not include a lock in the Up position. Drives me crazy too...I time mine up with a rope. Redneck solution...

As I said in post #2 tighten up bolt# 27 in the diagram and the motor should stay up when tilted...

This is the bolt it is the tilt bolt that the motor pivots on.. There is a strong spring involved as well and I was told to be careful not to over tighten it and break the spring...

This is not my motor but you can see the nut of the tilt pin bolt just above the transom screws.

That magneto was used for nearly 40 years.-----Many of the 9.5 / 10 / 18 HP models did have a factory installed stop switch.----So no you can not "hurt " that old magneto " with a stop switch.

I have installed these on 3 different motors..It is meant to clamp on a handle bar.. It fits nicely on the steering bracket..Another bonus is the man over board lanyard..Once I find my trolling speed I do not have to touch the throttle.. I can shut it down with the switch and it will start back up at the the same throttle setting..EDIT Also it is not a bad idea to use some kind of plug or connectors. If the switch fails you can just unplug it without the need of tools...
