As i'm digging deeper and deeper into a 2-year sitting motor more and more issues pop up, and here I am asking all you nice people for help once again... Got two questions...
A) The starter used to work, but after 2 starts in the water the starter solenoid stopped clicking; i checked the fuse in the sleeve, checked all grounds, checked mains. Trying to take apart the controls (1981 Evinrude, no power trim), suspecting erosion at the ignition switch, but all the screws are so eroded and the control covers themselves are corroded together that im no longer sure how to take the top part off to get to the ignition key (key was broken in the controls -- i had to break it apart and use a screwdriver to test the motor).
Does anybody know whether removing the three bottom screws (the plate to which the warm-up lever controls are attached) is sufficient to pop off the top/middle plate? I took off the shift/throttle and the warm-up levers, and am wondering if brute force is involved, or if i missed some hidden screw. Don't want to break something that aint broken...
B) The choke solenoid clicks in fine when i push the key in, but does not stay closed, only holds the butterflies closed for about 1 second no matter if i keep the key pushed in or not -- is that normal?
thanks once again,
Tom
