Your outboard is of the 1978 vintage. Oh, and its a long shaft for 20 inch transom. Don't know what the 'H' stands for. If it was an 'E' then it would be electric start. And are you sure that's not a 'C' on the end?

thanks yes it is a C.got another problem now.i changed the petrol pipes under the HUD. there are three pipes. the new pipe is 2mm bigger and when i started it it turned over i pumped petrol the usual way then it stopped turning over. i took the plugs out and the bottom pot was full of fuel to the point that it stopped it turning over .it started at first then allot of black oil came out from all over it was running fine before i was told to change these pipes.could this be the pipe is to big and to much fuel is pumping in.it isn't leaking at any of the pipes.thanks again greai site this by the way

Don't think the size of the fuel lines is the problem. One of those lines goes to the crankcase to provide the pressure pulse that operates the fuel pump. Wonder if you didn't get them mixed up somehow and your actually feeding fuel to the crankcase instead of the carbs? I'm guessing that's it.

I assume you are somewhere in Great Britain? Have you no Evinrude dealers there? The number given is correct, 385784. It is available. I'll bet the 18-7353 here at iboats will work, but can't say that for certain.

Couple of good dealers for parts in the UK are

www.willsmarine.co.uk in Kingsbridge, Devon

and

www.outboards-direct.co.uk (AKA Oakley Marine) in Brighton

Im sure there are others but those two i have made a note of

BTW I would have guessed that model number to be 70EL78C making it a 1978 Johnson !
I would not have said it was necessarily a 20" shaft model. Same number equally applied to the 15" shaft model

If that is right manuals from KEN COOK

Re: Johnson 70hp seahorse help needed

realy good site this
It is. The best i know for outboard help esp the Johnson and Evinrude board

I use the YBW.com forums in the UK but always recommended i Boats for any outboard questions that don't get answers on there. ( Visit and you'll soon recognise my dragon )

Glad you got good service from Outboards direct. I had good service from them too recently. Took a few days for the part to arrive because it had to come from Belgium but I had a telephone response to my initial email enquiry within a couple of hours. :)
