Hi I've got a chance to buy a 1988 johnson 8 hp for $125 it supposedly ran a year and a half ago but was getting cranky about starting. Also it was run in salt water. I'm thinking a carb rebuild and maybe a set of rings. What do you think should I buy this rig.

I don't think I would buy a almost 20 year old salt water motor without a through test drive at the least. And do a compression check.

DITTO steelespike----A used motor like that could be a very expensive one after all the work it takes to get it like you want it (even if the guy GAVE it to 'ya). You'd be better off spending more for a freshwater motor for 3 or even 400 more that was running good. Those motors are highly desirable and there's probably a reason it is only $125. Ask if you can see it run and if you can check the lower unit oil.
Just my opinion,

Does it show on the finish that it has been run in salt water? If it was flushed, and well cared for, $125 would be a steal. Check, and see what that engine sell's for new.

Re: Johnson 8 Hp

I would definitely look at it.

I have a 1989 8hp longshaft off my sailboat and it was run in salt water also before I got it... it worked well for the first year or so but now has cooling problems (water just dribbles out the pee hole) so I haven't run it in the last year or so... I expect that salt is in there somewhere or there's an upper grommet problem... But It needs to be looked at... it's on my long list of engines to fix as I plan to sell it afterwards as it's way to new for me...
