Johnson '86 40hp hard to start after shutting down

After shutting down the motor, and trying to restart, it dies. This happens whether using idle lever or just starting. It doesn't sound like it is getting enough gas. I changed the throttle screw so it would run faster ( it shook a lot a low idle!) and adjusted the lever setting a tad but got the same results. There are no carb adjustments. It has new plugs.

Any idea what is causing this?

check vent/fuel lines
might need a carb rebuild

check your spark, sound like it's dropping a cylinder.

There is spark to both plugs, squeezing the bulb didn't seem to help either. I have boths carbs soaking in carb cleaner in case the low speed jets are plugged or something else in there.

Preety sure it doesn't need a carb rebuilt. I wonder if linage could do it, although the former owner said he never had any problem with it.

Take them out of that carb cleaner
never soak marine carbs in carb cleaner

Why shouldn't they be soaked in cleaner?

the carb cleaners eat through the sealant the crb companies use to seal the carbs

What manual is that from, Justintime?

It looks very much like the instruction in my 1990 manual referring to plastic carbs, just before the picture of the can of aerosol Gumout being used to clean the carburetor.

Justintime,

Too late. What do you scrub them with and what do they use a sealant for? I took everything off that wasn't metal.

Justintime,

Maybe a better question is, do I need to have them resealed?

solvent tank, i do not soak though
if u do not have that i like power tune by merc/quicksilver

each manufacture has there own carb cleaner, the problem with auto carb cleaner is that it is too strong and will actually eat away at the carb sealer the factory puts on it

When you say that there is spark on both plugs how did you determine this? Your symptoms point to a dropped cyl.

There's a pretty good thread going on about soaking carbs. Take a look. Probably not the right forum to discuss this but.....

I checked the new plugs by using a device that goes between the plug wire and a ground. The spark jumped both gaps.
