Still trying to get my 9.5 to run.....

After taking off the armature plate to replace the spark plug wires I noticed black oil under the plate - see the photo.

Is this a sign of a bad crankshaft seal or something else?

Thanks

It probably is the result of somebody being overly generous with lubricating the mounting rings. Heat and vibration liquefies it and it makes a mess. AND POSSIBLY some seal leakage too, which would mix with the grease and make it even thinner.. Remember, when it leaks out, seal leakage is clear like the gas and oil that you put in the tank. But when mixed with grease, it turns black like the grease.

Thanks F_R

I'll clean it up and see if the "leak" continues.

Another question if you don't mind - when I put it all back together what should I use to grease the mounting rings?

Thanks again

Any general use EP grease will do. But do it sparingly. Just a light smear on all the sliding surfaces is all that is needed. Any more just makes a mess.
