johnson 9.5

I went out with a friend of mine this weekend on his 14 foot jon boat; he has a 9.5 hp johnson on the back. He doesn't have computer access so I told him I would write in for him.<br /><br />It would start alright and run ok at low speeds but when he went to speed up something was definitely wrong. The RPMs would increase but the speed stayed the same. The only other thing I noticed was a good amount of white smoke.<br /><br />Any suggestions?

Hello.<br />White smoke as in steam from a blown head gasket perhaps??.

Couldn't tell, it was dark (about 1:30am)

There are a few things you can try.<br />A: Take the plug wires off.Set the engine in reverse and try to turn the propeller forward(clockwise).If you can turn the prop without the engine turning Your problem is a spun prop.<br />B:You were in a very weedy place and on top of that you picked up a few yards of fishing line.<br />Check it out by taking the prop off and cleaning up around the drive shaft.<br />The white smoke is the one that is real worrisome.<br />Try to run it in daylight and see what you can see.
