Johnson 9.9 1969 small backfire?

Just bought this, and got started and has a backfire, not enough to kill it just does not run smooth, New gas and oil. Where should I start looking?

there wasnt a 9.9 made in 1969....so you either have a 9.5, or a 1974 or newer 9.9. either way, is the backfire at idle or at higher rpms? try backing out the low speed needle a quarter turn and see what happens.

model 9R-695 serial J3094382 Johnson what do you come up with what this engine is?

9R 69S is a 1969 9.5 hp...so your 695 is probably a 69S...

Yes I believe that is correct as I have looked by blowing the picture up of the tag. and adjusting the pilot jet reduced/eliminated the caugh it had. Thank you
