I had a hard time removing the lower unit on my CD-24D. Finally it came out and there was a roll pin near the top of the shaft that was mangled. Should I have removed the power head and that roll pin to get the lower unit out? On the drawings it looks like the pin is above the bronze bushing the main housing.

That pin drives the mechanical seal under the powerhead.----Very important.-----Need to look up there to see a slot for the pin to go through.

Thanks. On further examination I see that the pin applies pressure on a washer that forces the spring against the lower crankcase seal. The washer, spring and seal all spin with the shaft. I thought the lower washer was a bushing and could not figure out why the pin was there. It actually engages the washer which spins with the shaft. I think I got it now.

I understood how this was made / worked back in 1968.----There are no mystery parts on a CD model for me.

I broke that roll pin on the 1st 6hp gearcase drop years ago, as I imagine many others have - thinking force was needed. Rotate flywheel until the pin aligns with the slot in upper exhaust chamber..
