hi, had my boat out for the first ime yesterday. i have a johnson j150gled fast strike. it would start fine at first then onnce it was warmed up i couldnt take the high idle down because the rpm's would go down below 1000 and stall.i did kinda play with it and get the boat to scoot down the lake for about 2 minutes but i had to play with the throttle to keep it running. after that i couldnt get it to stay running at all. im very mechanically enclined, i work on cars for a living, but im lost on an out board. i dont know where to begin. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks,

ben

I see its a 1996 with optical ignition 60 deg V6 looper.
See if ken cook has your factory service manual
www.outboardbooks.com

or
www.marineengine.com ( I think thats the link)
MAybe this one covers your engine, make certain.

http://www.marineengine.com/parts/p...e=Service+Manual&Engine=438223&Model=150GLEDB

If no luck ebay usually has them.

You're gonna love outboards if you know cars.
The odd thing is the 6 cylinders are like 6 seperate engines , but joined at the crank. They have their own carbs and many problems originate in the carbs. Rebuilding carbs is a regular thing due to the oil being mixed with the fuel, its easier than a car carb.

I'd start by baselining the engine,
compression should be within 10% on all cylinders.
If not try seafoaming it. Mine are around 80-85 PSI.
Other engines run much higher compression but these big loopers don't.

Spark needs to jump 7/16ths inch.

If those check out, start in on the fuel system.
How old are the lines? bulb?
Has the tanks been cleaned ?
fuel filter (cone shaped between the carbs)
If you don't know the history and its new to you its smart money to replace all the lines and clean tank.
Order carb kits here on iBoats and rebuild them, usually around $20 per kit.
Make sure you have the correct Champion sparkplugs, they don't seem to like other brands.

if that don't correct it you'll need a DVA multimeter and start testing the coils , stator and powerpack etc. If you don't have one you can get them on ebay for around $60.

This section applies to your engine too.
http://www.maxrules.com/fixomcoisignition.html
If you have the DVA meter you can follow these ignition tests.

Re: johnson fastrike

thanks. that gives me somewhere to start. im really bummed about it. ill start with fuel and go from there. is carb cleaner ok to use when the engine is running to try and clean out some of the funk or is that a bad idea. im going to see about getting a manual too. i really hope i can fix this without having to take it to a shop and costing me a fortune.
