Is there a special method for removing the magneto plate on these motors? The magnet in the center won't come off the shaft.

Well after several hours of no results, I decided to go for broke and tried the flywheel removal method. The magnet isn't held in by anything except friction and slightly prying each side where there is a large gap beside the coil and gently tapping on the shaft eased it up.

Glad you got it. But you can't always get an answer as soon as you expect. Some of us have other things to do. And some of us aren't old enough to know the answer on such an old motor. I just now checked in and would have told you what you have discovered on your own (I'm old enough). But all is well.

BTW, there are a lot of us old guys at the antique outboard motor club's Ask-A-Member forum at www.aomci.org

Thanks, I got kind of impatient since I had already been at the magneto plate and gas tank plate for a couple of hours before I decided to try posting.
