Johnson Oceanrunner Outboard Quit - Timing?

After 90 minutes of cruising today, my 1993 Johnson Oceanrunner 225 hp began to sound differently.

I was at idle in the Mississippi River, and throttled up. But the engine was real slow in accellerating, and would not reach high rpm. I had been running no problem at 3800-4400 for the previous 90 minutes. But now the boat would barely move.

Luckily, we were near a marina, so turned into the harbor. At low rpm in the harbor, the engine quit -- had to paddle in! Would not re-start when we got tied up at the dock.

I waited a half hour -- would not re-start. Waited another half hour. Did start, but only with throttle assistance - and would not run at all at idle, and it quit.

I bought this rig ten days ago -- it's a 1993 Boston Whaler 21 foot Outrage with the 1993 Johnson 225. The previous owner told me he had the engine tuned in March with new plugs, and also something done to the timing.

I have run this rig for less this three hours total since getting it -- no problem until today. Now I am stuck.

Any assistance, thoughts or opinions on this will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Faster, thanks for your reply. To answer your question...to me it just sounded as if the engine was working harder, and maybe the "sound" of the motor was deeper.

In the last half hour, I have searched iBoats forums and found LOTs of remarks about Johnson Oceanrunner engines, all types of problems and solutions, related to rpms and stalling.

I do wonder, however, if the timing could be a factor in this situation.

As mentioned, the previous owner had the timing adjusted in some way or some timing compoenent replaced in March of this year. I just recently bought this rig.

Before going out today, I put premium quality Pennzoil 2-stroke marine oil in the VRO tank, and 15 gallons of gas from the marina pump -- can't imagine that being a negative factor.

I am not a mechanic, and welcome any thoughts or opinions to take to my mechanic when I take the boat there.

Again, thank you, Faster, and to all who post a reply.

Do a compression test like faster said. Sounds bad to me, hopefully its not.

Walker, thanks for your reply. I ordered a compression check by a mechanicc before I bought this rig recently -- all cylinders checked out OK.

When you say "Sounds bad to me..." what possibilities are you referring to?

Again, thank you for your reply, sir.

What Walker is saying is that its time to do a compression test again. We know it was OK before this happened, we need to know if its still OK.
