4-stroke=
Heavier
No mixing or oil tank
Quieter
Uses less gas
Troll forever

2-stroke=
Lighter
Faster(Most Cases)
Noisier
Mix oil or fill tank

But On a small boat, I would still go with a 2-stroke..IMO

Ditto !

I've always been big on Johnson, but they don't seem to be in the market much.Makes me a tad leery about parts as well as technical experience.Newest I've seen is 2003,and not many.

No, a 4s won't last longer. There are tons of 50 yr old 2s running all the time. What size and type of boat and hull mat'l? If your going to be carrying the motor, 4s is generally a lot heavier than 2s. Motor is small enough so fuel use won't matter too much. Johnson are definately not junk, just older technology, carbed motors, also very simple to work on. Evinrude is the high tech BRP brand now.

Re: JOHNSON OR MERCURY

The reason you don't see a lot of Johnson engines on new boat packages is that most of the boat brands are owned by Brunswick Corp, who also own Mercury.

Brunswick will not allow dealers to sell their boats with anything but Mercury engines on them.

In a 25, Johnsons are better and more reliable engines than Mercury. The older Johnson 25s are among the best outboards ever made. Take a 30-40 year old Johnny 25 and treat it right and it will last another 30-40 years.

Also.. . PLEASE STOP SHOUTING AT US!! All capitals are hard to read and are viewed as shouting here.

Good luck, and welcome to iboats. :)

Re: JOHNSON OR MERCURY

all johnson 4 stoke outboard motors up until this year i think were made by suzuki.there are millions of small 2 strokes out there happily trolling along all day.if your concerned about weight atall go 2stoke.some day when im rich and famous i will buy a large e-tec for my boat, maybe in a few years the relialabilty will be proved or dis proved.

You can also take the advantages of both, when buying an E-tec Evinrude or a Tohatsu TLDI.

These are both 2-strokes with more power than the usual older 2-stroke engines. They also use less fuel than a 4-stroke, and are not that heavy. They even run very quit...
