Hey everyone,
I have a johnson outboard that has been "run through the mill"so to speak.
I'm trying to find out exactly what year it is.
before you say serial&model number-I have no idea!the cauwl has been smashed then replaced.due to the cost of decals the prievious owner did not flip for the stripes.I have been told it is an 1980-83 7.5 hp johnson. Before you ask the next question-there is also been a change in the transom bracket-the plate was removed from the original bracket but was misplaced several years ago.Are there any other places on the outboard\powerhead that will tell me what it is??Thanks in advance.

There may be a Welch plug (looks like a freeze plug) on top of the cylinder with the model nr. stamped on it.

c/6
Hooty

I have just looked at that plug, the number off of it reads C616221B is this a part number or significant in some other way?

I think that's the serial number... pretty sure "C" is for Canadian model (would have bilingual stickers etc). The us models often have the serial and model stamped on that plug.

Brent

There is someone on this site (I can't remember who) who can extract every detail from those serial numbers - down to what color underwear you have on.

Keep bumping until he sees the thread.

Aldo

That serial number looks around '72-'73 to me. Go to The Old OMC Site and browse around their catalogs to see if you can't narrow it down a bit by sight.
Jack Shellac has figured out serial numbers on later model outboards - I think this is who Dunaruna is talking about. I don't know if he does earlier numbers though.

Good luck!

No, no - I'm sure I've seen Jack Shellac pull up warranty and service info from serial numbers, including the owner's underwear size and style. All I've managed to do is make educated guesses about their years. Sometimes wrong, but usually not by much.
I might be way off this time since the 7.5hp was only recently made between '80 and '83. Click here to see some pictures of a 7.5hp so you can compare your outboard with it.
